[ANSWERED] Organizing Photos In The New Facebook Timeline

UPDATE: Normally, when Facebook updates the photos/album user experience, I just update this post.

However, recent changes have been pretty big, so I went ahead and wrote a new post with updated instructions, which you can find here.

Cheers!

With the rollout of the new Facebook timeline to most users, there has been a lot of confusion about how you used to do things in Facebook and how you do them now.

For me, one of the most confusing has been the organization of photos.

Because I upload a lot of photos to Facebook from my phone, every photo lands in my “Mobile Uploads” folder (also known as an album) by default. In the past, I would go into Facebook and edit the photo and choose which folder I want the photo to live in going forward.

With the new Facebook timeline, there has been a LOT of confusion, with some people arguing that you can’t re-organize photos at all with Timeline. The good news is that is false.

You can still organize your photos, it’s just a little different.

If you have tried to move photos around to a different folder, you have likely noticed that there is no way to do this by editing the photo. As seen in the image below, you can edit all kinds of image attributes like description, location, and who was with you when the photo was taken.

Dropping down the little gear icon in the upper-right corner will even allow you to rotate the photo or set it as your profile photo. What it doesn’t allow you to do, however, is move it to a new folder.

Editing a photo within the new Facebook timeline allows you to adjust the description, who was with you when you took and the place where it was taken. You can't change what album it resides inEditing a photo within the new Facebook timeline allows you to adjust the description, who was with you when you took and the place where it was taken.

So, once you have edited the photo, how do you move it to a specific folder? You actually do that by editing the folder information. So, to move the photo of my angry bird I do the following:

Clicking the Albums link will take you to a view of all the folders you have created for your Facebook photos

1) First, decide on which album you want to move the existing photo out from. You can see the full listing of your current albums by clicking the “Albums” link next to your name (see image).

2) Next, click the album where the image currently resides. In my case, I am moving an image out of the “Mobile Uploads” album and into a new one I have created.

3) Click the “Edit Album” link which will change the view of the album, giving you more control over the album and the ability to move photos.

4) Find the photo you want to move and locate the  small drop-down image in the upper-right corner. Click that and choose “Move To Another Album”

You can move an image to another album with this new dropdown menuYou can move an image to another album with this new dropdown menu.

5) Select the new album and then click “Move Photo” and you should be all set!

Select your new target album, where you want the photo locatedSelect your new target album, where you want the photo located

Clear as mud? It’s a little awkward, but Facebook is still working out all the kinks of timeline and all the changes it brings.

Hopefully, they will realize that this is a user-experience nightmare and will adjust the process to make it easier.

In the meantime, I hope this tips helps you better organize your Facebook photos.

Know of a better/faster way or is this not working for you? Feel free to leave a comment!

Cheers!

–Sean

  1. I am having difficulties with re-showing albums in Timeline. I have hidden a photo album with 100+ pictures from Timeline months ago. I now may want to re-show it on Timeline. However, I have to show all 100+ pictures individually on Timeline rather than one single album. I have tried the audience selector and the activity log, they don’t work. Does anyone know how to re-show a previously hidden photo album ? Thank you.

  2. Cheers for posting, mate!

  3. I did this but the only options are Make Album Cover or Remove this Photo …..

    I can send a screen shot….

I’m trying to move from Mobile uploads.

  4. I am having the SAME trouble. When I click photo on the main timeline screen I have 3 options. Photos of you – Photos – Albums. Under the photos tab I see EVERY photo ever uploaded. I don’t want them even viewed as some were in albums marked “only me”. The only options I have is to “edit” or “remove”. Can someone PLEASE help????

  5. Thank you!!!!
I wish I had found your post sooner!
…would have saved me a lot of frustration.

  6. Im not sure if this is mac-specific, but you can’t move a photo to another album/folder if it has been commented on or liked. If the photo was commented/liked and you click the drop down, the “move” option does not show. I also hate that you can’t create a new album unless you add photos from your desktop. In many cases, the photo that is in my ‘mobile uploads’ requires a new album. Can’t be done. I won’t even go into all the things we lost with the latest iOS facebook app. Getting tired of Facebook.

  7. I had posted a photo and comment as a status. This then had lots of lovely comments made but somehow I accidentally hid it from timeline. I now want to return it to my timeline, but all I’ve managed to do is to share the photo with my timeline and all the comments and likes (although still showing on the photo in my album) are not showing on my timeline photo…is there a way to correct this?
    Thanks

  8. I’m having the same problem as Ria:
When moving an image into a new album the drop down menu that is presented does not show all my albums. Does anyone know why this could be happening?

    Thanks

  9. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Been driving me crazy & now it’s corrected! Thank you!

  10. If somebody can help me: since 1 month, I can’t move the photos in my albums; they are blocked. The albums can be moved, but not the photos; I don’t understand why appeared this problem ?

    • i spend hours trying to move from mobile upload to photos, not working. but i discovered that if you are in the mobile album, go tag yrslf and will appear on yr photo album, you cannot delete in mobile upload album otherwise it will disappeared from yr main photo album. funny…. means its a shortcut then. hmmmm…..

  11. What I am seeing is that photos that were loaded as a group into the timeline and not an album will not move. The ones loaded one at a time into timeline will move. Also I can not move anything back to the timeline once it is moved off of timeline. This also applies to mobile uploads as well.

  12. But it seems like you can’t do that with Timeline photos and Cover photos.

This suggestion works well with one exception. Moving photo’s to a new folder now places them at the top of your timeline as if you’ve just reposted them. My timeline is now completely out of order. Anybody know how to tell it to sort by the original upload date?

  14. There seems to be a problem when trying to move photos that don’t appear in any album. For example, if someone uploads a bunch of photos all at once to a timeline, they do not appear in any album. I can’t see how to get them into an album, since the only place I can find the menu with the move option is within an album.

  15. It is easy to move images from one album to another. But when I want to get rid of an empty album, often there are comments pertaining to the whole album and they can’t be moved. I wish there was a way to preserve these comments and then delete the empty album.

  16. what about the photos in a “GROUP”? Can I move the photos from the GROUP’s timelime to an newly created album?

  17. Sean, I’m the creator or “owner” of a FB group, where members of the group can post pictures of the group subject. Now, there are a bunch of individual photo’s that I’d like to start placing in new albums, so the individual photo’s are better organized. Do you know any way to take the individual photo’s not currently in any album of a group, and move them into new albums??

  18. I uploaded a photo to my first timeline life event but I did it at a later time (2 weeks later) after I added the life event. The photo did not show up in my newsfeed. I’m not sure if it is because I did it after the fact or if it is because it never shows up anyway. How do you fix this?

  19. The Phoenix says

Similarly to Cara April 9, 2012 at 9:54 am I would like to simply sort the order of photos WITHIN an album so that is I have time lapse or event photos I can arrange them as they happened!

I followed your suggestions for moving photos to albums but it will not allow simply moving it to another location within the album! I believe you used to be able to do this.

    • You can click on and drag them to a new order when in edit album. I just can’t get them to stay in the new order! I click “save” but when I go back, it’s in the same order it was before I moved it!

  20. i moved to an album, but i lost all my checkins.. how can i get back my checkins on my timeline.

PS: thank you for your post.
